Screen printing in Manchester 1980 to 1986

I learned to screen print at a community printshop called ‘Community Expression’ at 178 Waterloo Place, Oxford Road next to Manchester university - now the Manchester China Institute. The shop moved from there to the North Hulme community centre - a building on Jackson Crescent that has been redeveloped as Brian Redhead Court, accommodation for Manchester University postgraduate students.

I joined up with the Manchester flyposting team and the printshop became known as Lola Publicity - firstly at No.1 Blind Lane, Ardwick (building is still there but derelict) and then at the junction of Claremont Road and Princess Road in Moss Side. That one has been demolished, rebuilt and the Claremont Discount Store is on it’s former site.

Lola Publicity printed and flyposted gig posters for the newly opened Hacienda club, Fac 51.
